I’ve mentioned before that I bought a foreclosure this year. I’ve been remodeling it little by little, as I have time and money. My favorite antique store just happens to be located one street over from my house, so I stop in often to check out the latest treasures.
A couple of months ago, the shop owner, who goes to my church, posted a picture on Facebook of a chair with an ottoman. I immediately fell in love with the chair. The fabric matched perfectly with my bedroom, and it looked oh-so-comfy, too! I could picture the chair in the corner of my room by the window, the perfect spot for Bible reading and prayer.
However, items sell quickly in this antique store. I assumed the chair would be gone by the time I had the money set aside for it. So I didn’t get my hopes up.
I decided to stop by the store when I had the money, just in case no one had discovered “my chair.” I slowly walked to the back corner of the store and held my breath. I turned the corner and smiled when I saw the chair still sitting in its spot!
Don’t get me wrong. I realize a chair is just a chair, and things aren’t ultimately what make us happy. But I do think God wants us to enjoy the world He created and surround ourselves with beautiful and inspirational things when we can. I think He realizes we are bombarded by noise and distractions in this world and that sometimes we need visuals to refocus our thoughts and remind us Who we’re living for. I also think God honors the time and spaces we dedicate to Him.
So now this chair is happily tucked away in the corner of my room, and I call it my Bible Reading Chair. For some reason, I think more clearly in that chair. It makes me happy. It is a quiet place I set apart specifically for reading my Bible and other faith-related books, journaling, and engaging in much, much prayer. It is not uncommon for me to be snuggled up in the chair with a blanket in the middle of the night, praying about something God has put on my heart. Even Bradley knows if I’m in that chair, I’m probably praying.
Do you have a spot where you can unwind from a stressful day and reconnect with what’s important? Where you can remind yourself that God is sovereign, and He’s working everything out for your good? Where you can get away from the world and refocus on His truth? Where you can refresh and restore your hope?
I know it’s not Fiji, but my little chair in the corner is still one of my favorite spots in the world.
Jesus loves you,
